I Heart Characters: Grumps with Hearts of Gold

https://perspectiveofawriter.com/2018/04/19/i-heart-characters-meme/

I Heart Characters! is a weekly meme hosted by Dani @ Perspective of a Writer to showcase our book blogger love for characters! Each week she’ll supply a topic and you’ll supply the character. Post on whatever day suits you, about characters from whatever media you love (books, movies, K-dramas, television, manga, anime, webtoons, whatever!) and link up on Thursday so YOU and others can blog hop and share the character love. ♡
Technically this is a Thursday meme, which is why I'm breaking pattern and posting on a Friday. I haven't linked up with this before, though I have been meaning to for a while because, chances are, if I like a story it's either because of the characters or the character dynamics. I can get through any plot if the characters are interesting enough.

This week's topic is 'Grump with a Heart of Gold', which I obviously had to join in with because I love this character trope. It goes hand in hand with one of my favourite dynamics: they'll get it done if they don't kill each other first! A grump with a heart of gold is a jerk, no two ways about it, but they have redeeming qualities and, usually, there are one or two other characters who have earned their kindness, respect, or loyalty. Maybe they haven't even had to earn it. Maybe the grump gave it freely.

There's no real ranking system here, by the way, it's just the order in which the characters occurred to me.

Runners Up

Keith from Voltron Legendary Defender

Keith's had a tough life, and it's left him withdrawn, defensive, and hot-tempered. He's not great at connecting with people, however much he wants to, and he reacts badly to feeling of abandoned. Once he's close with someone though, he's a ride or die friend. Literally.

Kaz Brekker from Six of Crows

Kaz is unscrupulous, scheming, and capable of cold-blooded murder. He also cares, in his own way at least, about the other crows. Especially Inej.

Ronan Lynch from The Raven Cycle

It's still a toss up between Ronan and Noah as to who my favourite Raven Boy is. Ronan is definitely a grump with a heart of gold (Noah not so much). He's brash, violent, and he swears a lot. He also cares a great deal about his friends, his raven, and his brothers (well, Matthew, anyway).

Winner

Damian Wayne/Robin from DC Comics

https://giphy.com/gifs/dc-comics-p4G2wm2BeFyoM

Damian was raised in the League of Assassins which means that he's highly skilled in the art of murder, but nobody ever thought to teach him social skills. He also has the misfortune of being Batman's son.

(The kid never stood a chance.)

He was supposed to be the new body for his grandfather Ra's Al Ghul (supervillain) so he could continue living indefinitely, and did I mention he's Batman's son yet? (Yeah, he talks about that a lot.) He has an unhealthy obsession with legacy, a lot of arrogance, and a need for approval. He's also deeply insecure, which probably comes down to the fact that Batman chose most of his other allies. Damian, on the other hand, was pretty much forced on him. This combination of terrible social skills, arrogance, and insecurity makes him rude, abrasive, and capable of rubbing literally everyone else in the room up the wrong way within the space of a speech bubble.

But he is capable of being nice (well, decent, at least). He tries to save Sasha/Scarlet from Professor Pyg (and he's haunted by the fact that he fails), he's attached enough to Dick that he misses him when he moves to Bludhaven (not that he's happy to admit it), and he doesn't want to befriend Jon at all (that's why he keeps seeking him out to go and play hero - if you haven't read Super Sons, get thee to a comic shop). Not to mention that he's really good with animals and is slowly building a zoo in the batcave.

Who would your top three picks for grump with a heart of gold be?

  2. Kaz, yes! He comes to mind right away when I think about lovable grumps. Those kinds of characters can be incredibly frustrating, but also win you over and are super interesting to read about or watch. Another character I can think of is Nick from "New Girl." Nobody else is jumping out at me right now, but I feel like I should be able to think of tons . . .

    1. I think you're only actually supposed to pick one, but I wanted to mention everyone who immediately sprung to mind. :')

  3. BATMAN HAS A SON?!?!? I want to read those comics ajdfsalh I just never imagined him with a son for some weird reason.😂 Also grumps with hearts of gold are my FAVOURITES. Even when they're the gnarly old mentors who pretend to be all too old for a good time, but secretly they'll do anything for their kids.

Love love LOVE Ronan too jafdklsad he's my favourite Raven Boy. And also Wolfe from the Ink and Bone series? SUCH a grump. Also the actual best character there.

    1. To be fair, Batman didn't either for the first ten years...

Yeah, gnarly old mentors is definitely what comes to mind. Whilst I was writing this post I felt like I was doing something wrong because all of the characters I picked are kids or teenagers or young adults. :')

  4. Awww Keith and Damien are definitely winners <3
There's really something about these creatures that look intimidating but are softies really! I had a friend at University who was so intimidating because of how buff and tall he was - he also had this sort of face that looked like he would punch you but he was the sweetest and his hugs were the nicest <3

    1. This is probably my favourite type of character. Probably because most of my best real life friendships involve large amounts of sarcasm and judging each other's life choices. :')

  6. I'm such much behind for Marvel & DC comics I don't even know Batman now has a son (please forgive me hahaa). Nice post! I loved Ronan Lynch too. One of the good side of him I liked was how he was such a good brother to Matthew, I aspire to be that but my siblings might not agreed with me ha. And Kaz Brekker too, such a famous character.

    1. No judgement. I'm fairly new to comics myself. ;)
I loved how protective Ronan was over his friends and family, even if he was a cantankerous jerk at times. :')
